Voice Of Africa Children

Background

Voice of Africa Children (VAC) is a community-based organization established to support orphaned and vulnerable children through education to realize their potentials break the cycle of poverty. We believed that without the gift of education, a child’s life is extremely limited, and are inspired to change the way orphaned and vulnerable children live in Uganda.

We also support other socially excluded members of the community such as refugees, disabled persons, ethnic minorities, and unemployed who have limited access to resources to reduce social barriers and increased social inclusion. Our goal is to support families affected by conflict, and improve access to education for needy and underprivileged children.

Programs & Services:

We work with partner organizations and agencies to pool together expertise and maximize resources to support vulnerable children. Our programs include educational support for children in need, family support, support for young people, and advocacy.

• Education: VAC works to make sure that children receive good education, which will help them care for themselves in the future. We support kindergartens, primary, and secondary schools’ children in Uganda with school fees, supplies (i.e., exercise books, pens/pencils, text books), toiletries, sanitary pads, and other hygiene materials. In addition, we support training of teachers in refugee settlements.

• Family support: VAC works with local communities, and organizations to strengthen and support vulnerable families so that they can stay together. We ensure that families have access to basic goods and services such as health care and education. We also provide training and advice so that parents can break the cycle of poverty and generate an income to look after their children. Many of the families in our program need special support because they are affected by conflict and poverty. By strengthening families, we prevent children from being forced to go out to work.

• Youth empowerment: We support young people until they are able to live independently. We give them access to further education and vocational training so that they have the right skills to find a job, or start their own business.

• Advocacy: We work closely with state departments, local communities and organizations to improve the rights of children, in particular refugees and orphan children to help them reach their full potential.
